Minor White

Discover Minor White (1908-1976), one of the most influential and enigmatic figures in twentieth-century American photography, in the first major retrospective of his work ever staged in Europe. Held at the KBr Fundación MAPFRE photography centre in Barcelona, this landmark exhibition marks the 50th anniversary of the artist's death and brings together images that have rarely, if ever, been shown together outside the United States.

Co-founder and editor of the legendary Aperture magazine, White understood the photograph as a space for self-knowledge and spiritual transformation. The exhibition unfolds across four sections that trace the key stages of his life, from his early formalist work in Portland to the luminous, dreamlike landscapes of Rural Cathedrals, captured on infrared film. Along the way you will discover his recurring themes of nature, landscape, portraiture and the male nude, each charged with deep introspection.

At the heart of the show are his celebrated photographic sequences, a format he likened to a cinema of still images, including Slow Dance, his only colour sequence, presented as a dual slide projection. Drawn from the Princeton University Art Museum with loans from the Portland Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and Aperture, this is a once-in-a-generation chance to step inside White's vision.
