Joaquín Tusquets de Cabirol: The Eloquent Form

Step into the rediscovered world of Joaquín Tusquets de Cabirol (Barcelona, 1904-1979), an amateur photographer whose remarkable images of post-war Catalonia were almost lost to history. After the chance discovery of thousands of his negatives in Palma de Mallorca in 2004 and the confirmation of his authorship in 2020, KBr Fundación MAPFRE in Barcelona now presents the first exhibition devoted to his eloquent, long-overlooked work.

A chemist by profession and co-owner of a factory, Tusquets de Cabirol gave his free time to photography, working methodically with his Rolleiflex far from the professional circuit. A member of the Agrupació Fotogràfica de Catalunya from 1946, he developed and printed every image himself with meticulous care. From the coastline and the rural countryside to the streets of Barcelona at night, his lens turned the everyday into something quietly extraordinary.

More than a documentary record, his photographs reveal how light, composition and framing can reinterpret reality and hint at the silences of post-war Spain, moving from cinematic wide shots to details that border on pure abstraction.
